Lifeline Cord Blood Bank
The First Cells and Tissue Bank Established in Europe offering quality services to parents that wish to bank umbilical cord blood and umbilical cord tissue Stem Cells.
Lifeline was established in 2002 and is one of the few banks in Europe that bears the AABB accreditation. Lifeline is strategically located in Cyprus, with operations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East and the Gulf Region. Lifeline performs cord blood and cord tissue processing, clinical testing and cryopreservation, using state-of-the-art approved automated methods. The bank is committed to offering quality cellular therapy services of the highest professional standards, with respect to the parents that have entrusted the bank with their child's stem cells.
Being a family bank, Lifeline provides expectant parents the opportunity to save the umbilical cord blood and tissue stem cells which have been proven to be a lifesaving biological material.
Umbilical Cord Blood Service
Haemotopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation could be an option for the treatment of various serious medical conditions. One out of three patients in need of a transplant is unable to find a suitable donor with a compatible graft. Full compatibility between donor and recipient is usually essential when the graft is obtain from the bone marrow or peripheral blood. Umbilical cord blood is considered as an alternative graft and may be applied in therapies even with partial compatibility. Since 1988 Cord blood stem cells have been used to treat more than 79 life threatening diseases and disorders, in over 35.000 transplants with about 5.000 patients every year being treated using umbilical cord blood. In fact, since 2005, the number of Cord Blood transplants in pediatric applications, outnumber the bone marrow transplantsCryopreserved umbilical cord blood has already been tested and thus is readily available for an application to a family member should the need arise. Only the donor family has access to this graft.
LifeCord: Innovative & Awarded Methodology for Cryopreservation of Umbilical Cord Tissue
Lifeline offers cryopreservation services for stem cells that are found in sections of the umbilical cord. Lifeline has developed a unique and innovative methodology for the extraction of stem cells and progenitor cells from umbilical cord tissue and in 2014 the United States Patent Office has granted Lifeline the patent rights for this processing methodology (US Patent Office 8900863B2). This innovation bearing the name LifeCord, is a method for the extraction and storage of 2 types of isolated cells rather than segmented tissue with a mixture of cells. Cells are separated or dissociated from the tissue and cryopreserved.
Possible Future Applications of Stem Cells
The positive outcome from CB and CT stem cell research and applications has led to clinical trials for the treatment of other serious conditions. Researchers and scientists believe that future treatments will involve the use of stem cells from various sources, including Cord Blood and Cord Tissue. Research in the field commonly known as "Regenerative Medicine" is ongoing at numerous centers for the therapy of:
- Orthopaedic applications and bone disease
- Gastrointestinal conditions
- Transplantation complications
- Optical surface conditions
- Autoimmune and inflammatory disease
- Neurological conditions
- Ischaemic disease
- Cardiovascular conditions
- Burns and skin ulcers
