A local guide to the old city, museums and Venetian walls.
Nicosia—Lefkosia in Greek—is a city of layered history and everyday life. Its old centre is enclosed by 16th-century Venetian walls, with museums, churches, cafés and pedestrian streets gathered inside them.
1. Walk the Venetian Walls
The circular fortifications and their eleven bastions still shape the old city. Walk along sections of the moat and notice how the walls connect Nicosia’s historic quarters with the modern city.
2. Laiki Geitonia
This restored neighbourhood of narrow lanes and courtyards is a pleasant place to start exploring on foot. Browse small craft shops and pause at a café or traditional taverna.
3. Ledra and Onasagorou Streets
These central pedestrian streets mix shops, restaurants and cafés with older buildings and side alleys. Wander beyond the main streets to find quieter courtyards and neighbourhood details.
4. Leventis Municipal Museum
The museum presents Nicosia’s history through objects, maps, photographs, costumes and artworks. Its chronological displays make it a useful introduction to the city before a longer walk.
5. Cyprus Museum
Cyprus’s largest archaeological museum traces the island’s history through objects from excavations across the country. Allow time to explore the galleries rather than treating it as a quick stop.
6. Famagusta Gate
One of the three historic entrances through the Venetian walls, Famagusta Gate has been restored as a cultural venue. Its vaulted passage and position beside the moat make it a striking landmark.
7. Faneromeni Church and Square
This church and its surrounding square sit within the old city’s historic fabric. The area offers a quieter pause between the busier shopping streets and the western side of the walled centre.
8. Shacolas Tower Observatory
For a view over the rooftops and the old city, visit the observatory in Shacolas Tower. Check opening arrangements before you go, as visitor access can change.
9. Byzantine Museum and St John’s Cathedral
Located within the Archbishopric area, these sites offer a close look at religious art and the island’s Orthodox heritage. Dress respectfully and check visiting arrangements.
10. Ledra Street crossing area
The crossing point is part of the city’s modern story as well as a practical landmark. If you plan to cross the Green Line, use only designated crossing points and check current official guidance and document requirements.
Before You Visit
Nicosia spans both sides of the Green Line. Crossing arrangements and museum opening details can change; check official guidance and venue information before your visit.
